The Hand of Fatima is seen throughout North Africa, (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria), Israel, Turkey, and less frequently in other Middle Eastern countries. It is particularly revered in Morocco, where many artistic renditions can be seen. It protects from all forms of evil or negativity, and can been seen in pendants on necklaces, door knockers, stencils on doors, wall hangings, fibulae, stickers on cars, and in other decorative items. It is also called, "Khamsa" which means five in Arabic, and alludes to the nature of the five fingers on the hand. It can be crafted in 24 karat or 18 karat gold, sterling silver, various other metals, ceramic, wood, carved stone, and other more modern materials. There are many stylings, from filagree to simple renditions, and also more modern and abstract forms. The hand can be seen in the upward direction (fingers up) or in the downward direction (fingers down, more common in pendants and other jewelry).
Fatima was the daughter of the prophet Mohamed, and the power is attributed to her abilities to ward off evil.
